Invasive and interventional cardiology, in particular Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA), coronary stenting and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in acute myocardial infarct and acute coronary syndrome
Dr Yan is currently a Consultant Cardiologist and Physician in private practice at Gleneagles Hospital and Mount Elizabeth Hospital. Prior to leaving for private practice in May 1992, Dr Yan was an Associate Professor in Medicine, Department of Medicine, National University of Singapore and Senior Consultant Cardiologist) Cardiac Department at National University Hospital, Singapore. He is now a Visiting Consultant Cardiologist to the Cardiac Department of National University Hospital and Singapore National Heart Centre. He is also a member of American Heart Association (clinical cardiology, cardiopulmonary critical care and Epidemiology), an Associate Member of the Australia/New Zealand Cardiac Society and member of the International Andreas Gruentzig Society.

Having obtained his MBBS in 1976 in Singapore, he advanced to achieve his post-graduate degree in Masters of Internal Medicine in 1981. For two years, he was attached to the Cardiology Service, Alfred Hospital, Australia. There he subspecialised in invasive and interventional cardiology, in particular Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA), coronary stenting and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in acute myocardial infarct and acute coronary syndrome.

Dr Yan has published many papers in international journals as well as local ones; presented numerous papers at international symposiums and lectured extensively in the Asian-Pacific region. He is actively devoted to public health education like the Singapore Mass CPR Training and activities of the National Heart Week. In 1988, he was chairman of the Singapore National Heart Week focusing on the theme "Cholesterol and Your Heart". He again chaired the 1991 Heart Week on "Lifestyle changes for a Healthier Heart",
i) the use of PTCA/stent and glycoprotein llb/Illa platelet inhibitors / statins in the treatment and management of acute myocardial infarction and acute coronary syndromes.
ii) the role of drug-eluting stents and use of brachytherapy (vascular radiation) in the treatment of restenosis following coronary angioplasty
iii) the role ofangionesis (including myocardiogenesis, cell transplantation) and gene therapy in cardiovascular disease
iv) Hfestyle enhancement and modifications programmes in the primary prevention of coronary artery disease
v) lipid and hypertension management in particular with view of a total intervention in global atherosclerosis
vi) comprehensive integrated heart failure management program
vii) developing multi-specialty interventional vascular therapy programmes involving coronary, carotid, peripheral and renal vascular systems.
